Selecting and properly applying adhesives is crucial for assembling both plastic and resin models. Each type of model material requires different adhesive solutions and handling procedures.
Choosing the Right Glue
Plastic Models: Plastic cement (such as Citadel Plastic Glue) is highly recommended because it chemically melts and bonds plastic parts together, creating a permanent and strong connection.
Resin Models: Superglue (cyanoacrylate) is necessary for resin models, as plastic cement does not chemically bond resin.
Fixing Weak or Broken Bonds
Plastic Models: If a plastic cement bond breaks, reapply a small amount of plastic glue to the joint. The glue will melt the surfaces again, re-bonding the parts effectively.
Resin Models: Broken bonds in resin require removing old glue residue before reapplying superglue. Consider using a hobby knife or fine-grit sandpaper to gently clean the bonding surfaces for improved adhesion. Heavy or frequently handled parts may benefit from pinning and superglue reinforcement.
Removing Glue Mistakes Without Damage
Plastic Models (Plastic Cement): Excess plastic cement slightly melts surfaces, so immediately wipe off any surplus carefully. If dried, gently sand or scrape away with a hobby knife or fine-grit sanding stick.
Plastic & Resin Models (Superglue): Acetone or superglue remover can dissolve excess glue but should be used sparingly and cautiously, as they may damage paint or plastic surfaces. Alternatively, gently scrape away dried superglue with a hobby knife or sand carefully with fine sandpaper.
Handling Superglue and Plastic Weld
Plastic Weld (Citadel Plastic Glue): Apply sparingly. The glue will melt plastic surfaces for a strong chemical bond. Hold parts firmly together for 10-30 seconds to set.
Superglue (Cyanoacrylate): Ideal for resin and plastic-resin connections. It bonds quickly, so align parts carefully before applying. For delicate or precise joints, use a small applicator or toothpick for controlled application.
