Painting TroubleshootingUpdated a month ago
Priming and painting your models correctly can significantly enhance their final appearance and durability. Proper techniques differ slightly based on the materials and paints used.
Primer Not Adhering or Peeling
All Models: Ensure models are clean from oils, mold release agents, or dust. Washing models gently with mild soap and water and thoroughly drying before priming helps primer adhere properly.
Resin Models: Resin especially needs thorough cleaning to remove residual mold release agents. Use warm soapy water and a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry completely before priming.
Preventing and Fixing Paint Bubbling
All Models: Paint bubbling usually results from applying primer or paint too heavily or in humid conditions. Spray thin, even coats and allow adequate drying time between layers. If bubbling occurs, gently sand the affected area and reapply paint or primer carefully.
Avoiding Paint Chipping and Wear
All Models: Apply primer evenly to create a strong base. Seal models with a clear varnish after painting to prevent chipping and enhance durability. Multiple thin layers of varnish provide better protection than a single heavy layer.
Resolving Paint Drying Issues
All Models: Paint that dries too glossy or too matte usually indicates incorrect paint thinning or application. Thin acrylic paints appropriately—typically to the consistency of milk—for smoother application. Adjust with water or an acrylic thinning medium as recommended by your paint manufacturer.
Fixing Uneven or Grainy Paint Surfaces
All Models: Uneven or grainy textures usually result from paint being sprayed from too far away, insufficient thinning, or overly dry spraying conditions. Maintain proper spray distance (typically 6–12 inches) and ensure paint is properly thinned. If graininess occurs, gently sand the area smooth and reapply paint carefully.
Thinning Acrylic Paints
All Models: Properly thinning acrylic paints is vital for smooth, even layers. Use distilled water or specialized acrylic thinning medium. Aim for a consistency similar to milk. This helps avoid brush marks, clogs in airbrushes, and ensures better control of paint application.
Airbrush Troubleshooting
All Models: Prevent clogging and sputtering by thoroughly cleaning your airbrush after each session. Regularly thin paints to the recommended consistency, and ensure airbrush needle and nozzle remain free from dried paint residue.
Safety Note: Always spray primers and paints in a well-ventilated area or with appropriate respiratory protection to avoid inhalation of harmful particles.
