Why Do Special Order Items Show a Generic Black Games Workshop Box?Updated 36 minutes ago

If you’ve noticed that many Special Order items on our site display a plain black box instead of detailed packaging, you’re not seeing a mistake—this is completely normal and comes down to how Games Workshop handles these products.

What Are Special Order Items?

Special Order items are what Games Workshop refers to as “Online Only” products. These are not typically stocked in retail stores and are instead fulfilled directly through their webstore supply chain.

Because of this, they are often packaged differently than standard retail releases.

Why the Generic Black Box?

Most Special Order items ship in generic black Games Workshop packaging for a few key reasons:

  • No dedicated retail box art
Many of these items were never produced with full retail packaging. That means there simply isn’t official artwork available to display.
  • Older or niche products
Some kits date back years and were only ever sold in plain packaging, even at release.
  • Streamlined fulfillment
Generic packaging allows Games Workshop to produce and ship these items more efficiently without maintaining full retail presentation.

Why Don’t We Show More Detailed Images?

This comes down to strict IP and usage policies from Games Workshop:

  • We cannot use their product artwork or renders unless it is official box art
  • We are only allowed to show:
    • Actual box art (when it exists)
    • Photos of the models we take ourselves

Because of this, if a product only comes in a generic black box, that’s exactly what we have to show.

Are There Exceptions?

Yes—some Special Order items do have artwork:

  • Current box art (example: newer character releases like Yvraine)
  • Legacy box art (example: older kits like the Chaos Land Raider)

When these are available and allowed, we include them. Note that legacy box art is only for representation to help you chose items more accurately. These typically still come in the generic black box.

The Bottom Line

If you see a generic black box on a Special Order item:

  • It’s normal
  • It reflects how the item is actually packaged by Games Workshop
  • It doesn’t mean anything is missing from the product

You’re still receiving the exact kit as intended—just without retail-style packaging. If you are unsure what models are included in the package, please check the description of the item or look up the item on Games Workshop's direct webstore.
